Working at MAC has taught me a variety of different things when it comes to makeup such as different application techniques, product, customer service etc. The most important thing learned was makeup hygiene. MAC is very anal when it comes to making sure the product is sanitized along with the brushes used to apply the makeup. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people just put makeup on without first cleaning it or allowing the salesperson to clean the product for them. Sometimes out of the corner of your eye you see someone putting on a lipstick without it being sanitized and before you're able to get to them it's too late, they already have the product on.
This brings me to a story that was circulating around about a woman from New York who allegedly sued MAC Cosmetics because she contracted herpes from sampling a Rihanna Viva Glam lipstick at a pop-up shop at the Barclay Center.
The woman allegedly developed a cold sore on her lip. Two days later was diagnosed with herpes by her doctor. Not sure what the end result was but you can see where this is going. This is why it's so important to sanitize everything when you're trying on makeup. Wait for the salesperson to help you. Don't just put on the product. You have no idea the germs that's lurking. Even more so if you're a makeup artist. You're traveling around from person to person. Clean your product. You don't want anyone suing you over something that was avoidable.
Clean the product right in front of the client so they can see that you cleaned it with makeup cleaner. Sanitze your hands too. Bring travel sanitzer with you. Bring alcohol as well. Never blow on a brush. You transfer your saliva from your mouth onto the brush and then you place it on someone face. Big no no! We can't get so wrapped up in the “glamour” of it all that we forget what’s most important our safety!
